September 2021

This summer season has been Horrendous, Catastrophic and Devastating for everyone throughout Greece.

Even before the disasterous fires started here and on the mainland, Rhodes most famous tourist town Lindos was a ghost town. A few German & Polish tourists wandering about but business owners complained no one was spending money, however on a more positive note we noticed more love and attention shown to the cats by the Lindians than ever before, they were being fed, water left out plus requests for worm & flea treatments !!!!

End of June, July & August were stifling, with temperatures hitting 45-48 degrees on a daily basis, the breeze felt like a permanent hair dryer blowing on your skin, the worst heat in 40years. A fire in the centre of our island caused havoc burning a petting zoo ( Farma ) to the ground, many of their animals along with wild deer were burnt alive, others suffered severe injuries.

Everywhere is still tinder dry and the heat has the cats desperately seeking water, for the first time we started a regular morning drive round to fill water bowls which we placed everywhere in shade or under bushes…

Our feeding program also went through until end of June until the strays were nowhere to be seen, moving away when restaurants & hotels re opened and tourists were seen moving about.

Very little neutering occurred although as per usual every start to summer seasons more cats with injuries & wounds were reported but had to be found. It is extremely difficult and imperative someone is there within 15-30mins as the cats would just wander off, never to be seen again unless so badly injured they cannot move…
Kitler our famous Pefkos icon was actually one of those reported, thankfully it was early morning making it possible to get there within 15mins of the message being received. He was laying on the pavement not moving however it wasn’t an injury to any part of his body but a nasty, very swollen abscess on his face…

GCWS have been his legal guardian for over 4 years and after discussions with a couple of people that assisted in keeping tracks on him during the winter months, decided it was time for his retirement !!!!
Over winter Kitler was not found for days or weeks on end which was extremely frustrating & worrying not knowing if he was injured or even dead, this way he will be cared for until his last days…
We have kept everyone up dated on the face book page which is now shared with Yiannis PEFKOS ICONS.
Kitler attempted a couple of escapes, however he has settled well since and behaving, eating well and purring like a kitten…

Our neutering and winter feeding program relys totally on donations and with very few tourists, we started our fund raising events as early as we could. A coffee morning & two Ladies Lunches with raffles raised more euros for the coffers with a couple more Table Top events arranged in the run up to Christmas.

Apart from raising funds it has put a little joy & fun back into our lives after the stress of 3 x lock downs…

Once again we would like to THANK those of you who continue to support us with regular donations and those new Friends who have received their first newsletter..
